A Little History of Opera at St. Mark's

St. Mark's Opera Company is now in its 13th season and is affiliated with Association of Musicians "Firenze all'Opera." Years ago, there was a group interested in forming an organization which they did and performed chamber music in Siena. These performances were not well-attended and a colleague (who was an opera singer) suggested that the group try opera performances. That effort was more of a success, but the venue in Siena became too expensive.  The two leading members, Franz Moser (pianist) and his wife, Ilse moved to Florence and looked for a venue for their organization. At the same time, a new priest at St. Mark's offered the church as a site and the current format was established.

The company is a non-profit music society.  The singers come from different opera houses in Tuscany, most of them from Florence, coming together to create and experience the intimate atmosphere at St. Mark's.

Each concert supports AMALA, a charity project for children in South India.
